MODE OVERLOAD
Russia’s obsession with British rock group Depeche Mode is one of the great mysteries of the East. The intrigue deepens further still with the opening of Depeche Mode Bar by Mayakovsksya metro. Don’t miss the John the Revelator salad!

SCENE: As a wise man once said, you can please all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time. Theme bars tend to follow this maxim, and are destined to become either a novelty for the one-off visitor or a cult venue with ridiculously narrow appeal. So, when the theme in question is an ageing, English synth-pop act not exactly famed for their cheerful disposition, you’d expect the place to be planted firmly in the cult category. Let’s face it, received wisdom suggests that people who listen to nothing but Depeche Mode don’t get out that much. Pleasingly though, the recently opened Depeche Mode Bar gets the balance just about right and scores points on both counts. The theme’s there if you want it, but in a kind of unobtrusive, in-jokey way. Every detail sticks religiously to the theme, but with a knowing sense of humour and just enough subtlety to make sure that it’s never totally in your face. Diehard fans can lose themselves in the many and varied references to the band, while the less dedicated can simply enjoy this stylish bar.
LAYOUT: Depeche Mode lyrics scrawled on the walls of the stairway introduce the theme for those who haven’t got the idea already. Downstairs, the bar is split into two rooms. The first is larger and darker with a dance floor populated by men performing the ancient dance known as “Your Dad at a Wedding.” Blood-red walls and red fairy lights create a moody but cosy atmosphere, while the lyrics and band-related artwork on the walls probably mean something to someone, and add variety to the decor. The second room is smaller and brighter, and perhaps more suitable for sampling one of the curiously named menu items, like the John the Revelator salad.
GROOVE: Do we really need to tell you? A big screen shows a selection of Depeche Mode videos, while a DJ dishes out the band’s finest cuts and even takes requests. While not every single song played is by the boys in black, there is a distinct bias. Throughout the week, themed club nights such as a Soviet era Depeche Mode party as well as an ‘80s new wave disco.
PRICES: There’s a well stocked bar with beer from 60 rubles and vodka from 50 rubles. A bottle of champagne will set you back a mere 350 rubles and cocktails start at around 150. Keep an eye out for promotions on week nights. The food menu is equally reasonable, with snacks and salads from 100 rubles and main courses running 180 to 350 rubles.
BATHROOMS: The facilities are clean and comfortable but limited to two “themed”, unisex cubicles, suitably entitled “D” and “M”. Foot-high black lyrics on blood-red walls respectively proclaim “I Feel You” and “I Want You Now” on the back of each cubicle, making for a slightly disturbing toilet experience.
HOURS: Depeche Mode Bar is open from noon on weekdays and from 3 p.m. at weekends. Club nights start at various times, usually between 7 and 9 p.m., and wind up around 6 a.m., convenient for those catching the first metro home.
