New review de la part d'1 des modérateurs du site Empty World!
now that the hillier interview is all typed up i decided to do a mini review.
no point in a full review - we already have great descriptive reviews here.
but heres my brief rundown.
1 - a pain that i am used to.
fantastic track, excellent verses, the second verse sends shudders down my spine everytime, the chorus kicks in at the same time the bass kicks in, sounds like they pinched a noise from dr who that runs along when the verses are sung. Got to be the opening track on the tour.
2 - john the revelator
take the pump mix of personal jesus, add some heavy drums, distort the whole thing and turn it up to 10, then get dave gahan to sing/yell like hes never done before, and turn that up to 10, and you are nearly half way there. fantastic electronic stomping track.
3 - suffer well
odd one this, its probably going to grow on me, it is very obvious that its a gahan written track, but it has some really nice moments, i find it weird hearing martin singing backing vocals on this, which he does perfectly - it just seems weird, i cant quite put my finger on it.
4 - the sinner in me
this track is dark, very dark - kind of reminiscent of the sweetest condition if you had to compare, but far better.
the last 2 minutes of the track are bizarre, never heard gore play guitar like that before. buzzing bassline and thumping drums for 3 minutes, and then it goes all mental.
5 - precious
need i say more ?
6 - macrovision
never been a fan of the gore vocal tracks, the lyrics seems a bit odd "micorcosms" and "macrovision" - but its a very nice atmospheric track, which has a weird "heavy" bit in it, a bit reminiscent to the heavy bit near the end of "sister of night"
7 - i want it all
a slow track, but it has this magical lullably feel to it, and every time you start to think its dragging a little something else kicks in, some noise gets louder, or something changes, it manages to keep your attention, despite being one of the weaker tracks lyrically.
8 - nothings impossible.
come to daddy !!
dm have done it - mr gahan is forgiven for everything. this gahan penned track is just classic depressing depeche mode, and probably the darkest dm track i have ever heard, actually its definatly the darkest track i have heard.
gores guitar is so suited for the track.
its soooooooooooo dark, soooooooooooooo heavy. its reminiscent of "to have and to hold" - simple lyrics, but it just has something that i thought had been lost in dm.
this at the moment is just on loop all the time, and i havent once got bored of it, absolute class.
"just give me a reason, some kind of sign"
"i'll need a miracle to help me this time"
i could go on and on about this track.
9 - introspectre
odd mode instrumental, pretty uneventfull really - probably the intro music for the tour.
10 - damaged people
as i said earlier i am not a fan of the gore tracks, or should i say i wasnt. this is pretty damn fine. lots of fantastic synth sounds, excellent vocals. classic gore track, which will be massively appreciated by the gore fans.
11 - lillian
starts with thumping drums, and then it kicks off, if you had to compare it to previous dm stuff then i would says its a cross between "its no good" and "but not tonight" - it stinks of the poppy side to dm that we have seen a few times before.
i cant make my mind up about the effect used on daves vocals, it sounds a but too distorted if you ask me, the song feels a bit lost in the middle, but then it reverts back to its roots.
dont let me put you off - its pure dm pop.
12 - the darkest star
this song is a hard one to describe, its slow, melancholy, dark. it has this build up like "higher love" - and lots going on throughout, very atmospheric.
to sum up the album, its amazing.
its a weird one, the closest comparison to a previous album would have to be music for the masses, a diverse range of tracks, lots of atmosphere.
i definatly wouldnt compare it to exciter, ultra or sofad - it way off them.
the weird thing is - that if you say took "shine" off exciter and put it on playing the angel i think it would fit, as would most tracks off the last 3 albums - its that diverse.
every time a track starts to follow a predictable path - it changes (something mark bell didnt seem to do) - some mad noise kicks in, the bass goes up a notch, or some hideous distorted guitar kicks in.
anyway - i love the album, and have totally forgiven dm for the exciter thing they did.
everything is looking bright for dm, dave just needs to start smiling again.
the stars are definatly shining brighter for dm now !!
