The Arcade Fire: "Brazil"
genre: standards
"Man they got a gang of coffee in Brazil," (the late) Old Blue crooned, but he belted "Brazil" too-- so did Bing, Chet, Django, the Ventures, Cornelius (!!!), et al. Just saying, tough company. To the point: A hushed "2, 3, 4" and Arcade's string-laden take on the Barroso/Russell ballad soothes like soma, hewing closest to Jobim's dreamy rendition. Can't argue with the material or the schmaltz-- harp, violin, xylovibramaphone, an achy-breaky "we stood beneath an amber moon", some bossa. And true to funereal type, this "Brazil" makes a little lost romance earth-swallowingly huge, even without Regine's much-missed yowl. Win's emo-quaver is endearing, all right-- but sorry, he's no Frank. [Marc Hogan]
