Jamelia: beware of the dog (hit de l'année?) - Sample de personal jesus inside

Parce qu'il n'y pas que DM dans la vie : le punk, le post punk, les années 80 l'électro, le rock, la pop, Joy Division, Ian Curtis, David Bowie et tant d'autres...

So, our new favourite pop song is... 'Beware Of The Dog' by Jamelia.

Here is why.

1. It takes only 1.5 seconds - possibly less - to realise that the next three minutes will be brilliant.

2. It contains a huge sample of Depeche Mode's 'Personal Jesus'.

3. It is a proper sample of 'Personal Jesus' and not that copout soundalike thing the Sugababes had on their last album.

4. It knocks Rihanna's 'SOS' into a cocked hat. We don't know what a cocked hat looks like and if it's what we think it is WE DO NOT WANT TO SEE IT.

5. You could launch a boyband with it, and they would take it to Number One. It could also be a Number One for Rachel Stevens, Beyonce, Girls Aloud and The Kooks. Instead it will be a Number One for Jamelia.

6. It has amazing 'woo-ooh' bits in the chorus, along with screams of "stop! You'd better shake him off, before he gets you" and so on.

7. It is about a nasty man. Down with men! Girl power! Etc.

8. The nasty man thing explains the 'dog', ie the man is the dog. It is not actually about dogs. Especially not dogs like this.

9. The middle eight is a brilliant breakdown thing with Jamelia yelling "I know you hear me... You better reach out and touch me". The last bit sounds like the bit in the Depeche Mode song, which is very clever.

10. It is such a huge floorfiller it means that the DJs at Club Popjustice can FINALLY retire 'Since U Been Gone' from their playlists.

However, it is not all good news.

Reasons 'Beware Of The Dog' is not completely perfect:

1. It ends with a fade when really it should end with the sound of a dog in an electric chair or something. WHY, JAMELIA? WHY??!!

The rest of the album is probably very good, too. Unfortunately every time we try to listen to it we end up skipping back to 'Beware Of The Dog'. We will tell you some more about the album when we have listened to it properly.

JAMELIA has found an unlikely source of inspiration for her latest single — DEPECHE MODE.

The singer has sampled the rocky riff from the Basildon group’s finest tune (in my opinion anyway) Personal Jesus, and turned it into a dancey pop track called Beware Of The Dog.

I’ve had a sneaky listen and I think it has No1 written all over it.

The song was the last track added to her new album Walk With Me, out on September 25.

And record company bosses love it so much they want to make it the next single.

Jamelia also samples the classic organ intro from THE STRANGLERS’ Golden Brown for another song, No More.

Personal Jesus was a hit for DAVE GAHAN’s band in 1989 and it is a great track for live performances because it’s so rocking and raucous.

I told you last week how underwhelmed I was by Jamelia’s comeback single, Something About You, because it doesn’t feel like much of a progression.

But Beware Of The Dog is an absolute corker.

Jamelia rang me yesterday to tell me all about it.

She said: “I love a variety of music. People are sometimes shocked at how wide my taste is. I’m a bit of a closet rocker.

“I had finished my album and had left this track off because we tried five times to get it right but something was missing. But it was nagging at me as I knew it could be great.

“I delivered the album to EMI but then I kept thinking about this track. I knew that if I didn’t try again it would just drive me mad!

“That’s when we had the idea of using Personal Jesus. It’s funny as my boyfriend Darren, the kids and I live in Essex, and some friends were talking about bands from Essex.

I’m a Depeche fan but I never knew they were from Basildon! Anyway, the idea just gelled from there.

“I rang EMI and said that I wanted to hold the album until I had finished this track.

“It meant they were worried about everything being late but they were thrilled when they heard the song.

“It became a compulsion of mine to do it brilliantly.”

Rihanna's "S.O.S." was a decent enough idea with its roughed up Soft Cell riff, but there's certainly no need to make this a trend. Long-time UK soul dove Jamelia barely fiddles with the formula for her "Beware of the Dog", substituting Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" pon de riff and changing the tone from "hot for you" to "don't get burned". Same Beyoncé-ish vocals, same Beyoncé-ish quote-unquote emotion. The difference being that a song about hooking up doesn't need to be convincing, whereas one about the douchebaggery of men should sound a lot angrier than this. But again, we're living in B's World now, where people think "Ring the Alarm" is scary and "Deja Vu" is sexy, so maybe "Beware" is as fierce as we can expect.
