Hi,

- Synth Tone
This is in fact the intro to Exercise One - the eerie drone which I'd always assumed was expertly-manipulated guitar feedback.
- Hannetts Lift recording
Exactly as it says on the tin. Occasionally hear Ian sniggering (backing up Steve Morris' claim a few years ago that Hannett sent Ian into an old liftshaft to record the intro to Insight)
- Joy Division Keyboard doodles
Not sure what these ended up being used for, if anything.
- Hannet's Lift recording 2
The actual intro to Insight (with about 3 or 4 openings and closings of the lift)
- Joy Division Number false start 1 (Insight False Intro)
Just a single strummed guitar chord - could be anything.
- Curtis/Hannett/Gretton interplay chit chat and cup smashing
The I Remember Nothing bottle smash - nice bit of banter from Gretton towards Curtis, jibing him about being a United fan!
- Hannett speaks
As previously mentioned, interview from 1984 Play At Home documentary.
- Joy Division number false start 2 (Insight Chord)
Rough mix of Insight - Barney's guitar is really heavily flanged here, in a way that you just can't notice on the record because it's so deeply buried in the mix. Only about the first 40 seconds or so of the song (pity...)
- From safety to where
- Autosuggestion
Both rough mixes, not heavily processed as on the final releases. Really interesting to hear these tracks in this state.
- Heart and soul
- N4 Europop
- 24 Hours
- Passover
These are all basically identical to the Closer versions, except noisier/hissier - probably taken from an acetate prior to the vinyl being pressed.
- N4
- N4
- The Eternal
- The Eternal
Now these are really great to hear - both haunting, especially Decades, presented here in a sparser arrangement (without the overdubs which would feature on the finished version). At the end of The Eternal we get a bit more than on record, with perhaps a clearer snippet of that random vocal sample at the end (which also features, very quietly, at the beginning of one of these mixes).
More infos :
1) I believe the *original* source for these is genuine - something in Hannett's estate, or thereabouts.
2) Some of the tracks have been abysmally denoised. In fact, minus a couple of the N4s and the 2nd The Eternal, all the truly interesting bits sound like shite (the UP/UP session tracks for example). Autosuggestion is clearly a rough mix, missing the hard-delayed drum echo entirely. This makes it much more interesting than the official version, IMHO! Too bad it sounds awful.
3) 24 Hrs/"N4 Europop" (the track so entitled)/Heart and Soul/Passover are from either test pressings or acetates (test pressings on extremely fragile acetate material that is the first step after the "metal mother" record stamper is made but before the actual test-pressing-on-vinyl step). I would state they're almost certainly acetates, based on the type of crackle. It's entirely feasible Hannett had these in his possession to approve the record master. In actuality they're no different, minus some crackle/tape wear, than the final released versions.

See You
