Their debut EP, featuring their U.K. hit single, "I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor," is raw guitar pop, which, combined with their improbable youth, conjures memories of 1970s teen punk prodigies the Undertones, if the Undertones had been into U.K. and U.S. hip-hop, Oasis, System Of A Down, and Queens Of The Stone Age.

Kati Llewellyn reports:
Considering what the press has said about Arctic Monkeys recently, especially taking into account the hype their UK Singles chart topper "I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor" has received, they'd be the last band one would expect to release an album titled Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not. But because we aim to please, we'll attempt to play by Arctic Monkeys' rules.
Rule #1: Arctic Monkeys, who are not behind the upcoming record Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (not due out on Domino on January 30 in the UK and Februrary 21 in the US), are not responsible for the recently announced tracklist you see below:
01 The View From the Afternoon
02 I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor
03 Fake Tales of San Francisco
04 Dancing Shoes
05 You Probably Couldn't See for the Lights but You Were Looking Straight at Me
06 Still Take You Home
07 Riot Van
08 Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured
09 Mardy Bum
10 Perhaps Vampires Is a Bit Strong But...
11 When the Sun Goes Down
12 From Ritz to the Rubble
13 A Certain Romance
Rule #2: As previously reported, Arctic Monkeys cannot be held accountable for the release of their upcoming single, "When the Sun Goes Down", which is not available on both CD and 7" in the UK January 16 and the US January 24.
Rule #3: Arctic Monkeys are not playing the ShockWaves NME Awards Tour 2006 with Maxïmo Park, Mystery Jets, and We Are Scientists. If they were, however, the schedule would look like this:
01-24 Dublin, Ireland - Ambassador
01-25 Belfast, Northern Ireland - Ulster Hall
01-27 Glasgow, Scotland - Academy
01-28 Edinburgh, Scotland - Corn Exchange
01-29 Newcastle, England - Academy

Amy Phillips reports:
Arctic Monkeys: the next Franz Ferdinand or the next Menswe@r? (Poor Menswe@r. Always the butt of these kinds of jokes.) The States will get the chance to make that call in just a couple months, as the unbelievably hyped Brit sensations have announced their first North American tour.
The two-week adventure is in support of the Arctics' forthcoming debut album, the stupidly-titled Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, which is due out in America on February 21 courtesy of the lovely folks at Domino Records. The LP's British release date was recently moved up a week from January 30 to January 23, to prevent the masses from rioting. As previously reported, Whatever will be preceded by the single for "When the Sun Goes Down", which will fly off shelves in the UK come January 16, and will probably go mostly unnoticed in the U.S. on January 24.
We bet they look good on the dancefloor:

"I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor"</span>
genre: rock
These guys are the Arctic Monkees to Libertines' Beatles (or is it the other way around?): five blokes from suburban Sheffield playing Smiths and Clash-style pop-punk to sold-out shows without so much as an official LP to their name. "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor" starts off like a less fruity "John, I'm only dancing," with its talk of "dirty dancefloors and dreams of naughtiness." Course, the Monkeys probably couldn't rhyme "floor" with "whore" because Franz Ferdinand already have, but nothing-- copycatting, least of all-- really matters when kids are dancing to electro-pop like "robot[s] from 1984". Monkeys namedrop famous feuders (Montagues and Capulets) to prove the point: Dancefloor infatuations "ain't no love," but at least they're first to say it. [Rachel Khong]
