Brazilian born, Airto Moreira is a prominent drum solo artist and singer. Among his many later projects, he played at the re-opening of the Library of Alexandria, Egypt, and he taught at UCLA and California Brazil Camp. As well as Jazz concerts and recordings, he has regularly composed and contributed music to film and television, including scores for Apocalypse Now, and Last Tango in Paris. One of his high profile contributions includes playing percussion on "I Feel Loved" and "Freelove".
Here are dave comments on Airto:
"...On this album, there's a percussionist named Airto Moreira who at the time when we came walking into the studio in Santa Barbara, in a place where he works apparently quite a lot, I'm like, "There's some guy in the control room." We were walking into the live room and then he came walking in and we asked what he was doing and he said he was a percussionist. And at the time Mark Bell, who produced the album, was looking for a rhythm to go with this song that we were working with, and he pointed out that the rhythm that was there was very robotic and didn't have much feeling. And [Eye-E-Toe - Airto's nickname] said, "I can do something to add to that," and so we said all right, more or less, "OK, come on down, set your stuff up, see what you can do." It wasn't until later we found out this guy had worked with Miles Davis--we felt pretty stupid, actually. He was fantastic. He came down and set his stuff up on this little table and he played along to a song called "I Feel Loved," which is on the album, and he did all this kind of percussion and there was all this energy in the studio, there was a sort of hard electronic backbeat and my sort of droning dark, moody melody with the voice, and suddenly he was on fire. It was a great combination, so we used a lot of that stuff. I love that--I love when different stuff comes in and breaks up the idea that we have about ourselves. It challenges us. I definitely want to do that a lot more."
